Delight yourself in the Lord
November 7, 2007
What exactly does that mean, delight myself in the Lord? And if I do, the Word of God says, He will give me the desires of my heart. It was a little over four years ago that I read this verse for the first time. Well, maybe I had read it before, but that day, it fell fresh on me like only the Living Water can.
One thing came quickly to mind. The desires of my heart must be a lot different from the desires of my flesh. Just think of how many layers of skin we have on our bodies. That’s about how many layers of “fleshly” desires I had to deal with. My desire was to delight in myself. In Hebrews 4:12, it says that the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
That day my heart was being judged. And the verdict was guilty! Guilty of placing my delight in the things of this world instead of the things that will never pass away. My hearts desires were all wrong. As I began to change my focus from self to Jesus, my desires started to change. Imagine that!! Do you know what He delights in? You! I’m positive He delights in you when you choose to sit down, be still, and have that quiet time with Him. The more time you spend with someone, the better you get to know them. Think of your bestest friends right now……how well do you know them? I ask, do you know your Savior like that?
I encourage you to take time today and delight yourself in the Lord. He is able to meet you wherever you are. He knows all your needs and not one thing has slipped by Him. He makes a promise if you delight in Him, He will give you the desires of your heart, not your flesh!
In His Name,
Janice

Janice,
I’m so proud of you! Psalm 37 is a true spiritual marker in my life as well, as it was 22 years ago this month that the Lord began showing me what the true desire of my heart was to be, and it was Him! The lesson was learned at a place of brokeness; a broken trust by my first husband, a broken home, a broken marriage, the near death of my 2 year old daughter and a desperately broken heart. But as He transformed my heart and my desires I clung to the promise of the inheritance of the land! And He has been so faithful! “For no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Psalm 84:11
Barauch ha B’Shem!
I’ve retired my old NIV Bible that contains the tear stained pages of Psalm 37, but thanks to His Spirit it is written on my heart with tears of joy!
Love ya Sister, looking forward to our time together!
Lori

Janice,
This is so awesome. I could almost hear your voice when I read your beautiful (yet convicting) devotion. On Monday morning, God pointed me to Ecclesiastes 4:12 “…..A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” What an amazing way to strengthen that cord! Well done, my friend! I look forward to spending some time with you.
Love,
Missie
